Cadets begin play tonight
(05.14.2009) - In its third year of
existence, the Rapid City Post 22 Cadets is
playing an important role in the development
of talent for the program.
The Cadets, made up of mainly first-year players, opens up its 2009
schedule tonight, hosting Gillette, Wyo., in
a 5 p.m. doubleheader.
Fourteen players will dress for the twinbill, including seven from
last season's Canyon Lake Little League
squad that advanced all the way to the
Little League World Series, a first for a
South Dakota team.
"The purpose of the Cadet program is to help young players make a
smooth transition into the Post 22 program,"
Cadet coach and Academy director Kyle Yamada
said.
"Our goal is to help develop our players into the highest level of
competition possible. As young players in
the program, I believe that it's not only
important to develop physical skills, but
also to learn the game mentally and develop
positive character such as dedication,
mental toughness, and work ethic," Yamada
said.
The Cadets and their counterpart, the Bullets, are made up of 13-16
year old players who will make up the Post
22 and Expos squads in the future. Each will
play challenging schedules this summer,
playing some of the best 16-and-under teams
from Wyoming, Nebraska, Colorado and South
Dakota.
"We have a great group of young players this year. They work hard,
they are eager and they are very
competitive," Yamada said.
The Bullets will also open up their schedule this weekend. They
travel to Cheyenne, Wyo., for a four-game
series against Cheyenne Prep.
Yamada will manage the Cadets, while first-year coach Tyler Merriam
will man the Bullets. Jeff Barbier is in his
second year as pitching coach for the
younger teams. |
