SHEP'S PEAK

Leonard Shepherd grew up a baseball fan. He played the game as a youngster in Belvidere, South Dakota, continuing his playing days while serving in the U.S. Army. After moving to Rapid City in the 1940s, he joined up with amateur teams and his playing career continued. He coached in the Rushmore Little League and Colt League, plus VFW and 88s teams. He also spent many years as the skipper of the Rapid City Greggs amateur team.

His two sons, Gary and Lee, began playing for Post 22 in the late 1960s, and he quickly became a supporter of the program. For three years, 1969-1971, Leonard was the bus driver and mechanic. Then, in 1975, Leonard and wife Arlene took control of the concession stand, which they managed it for 13 years. In addition, he spent a number of years on the board of directors of Black Hills Sports, Inc.

After retiring, Leonard had the pleasure of watching his grandsons, Andy and Bryan, play in the Post 22 program. Son Lee and grandson Andy also teamed up as coaches in the system.

Shep's Peak is named in honor of Leonard, and it provides a gorgeous overhead view of Floyd Fitzgerald, featuring air conditioning and an enclosed environment to enjoy a night of baseball in Rapid City.

Located almost directly behind home plate, you get a view unmatched at Fitzgerald Stadium, great for a business gathering, birthday party, or merely a night out with friends to watch the legendary Post 22 baseball program in action.
